This book was published as part of artist Mark Menjivar’s exhibition Birds, Rats, and Roses in partnership with the Texas After Violence Project. Featuring an essay by the artist and more than 100 full-color images of newspaper clippings, notes, and music that Powell composed while on death row without access to an instrument, the book presents a personal archive Powell intended would one-day be made public. The project invited guests to explore the museum by looking and listening for twelve bird installations. The exhibition signage took the form of “birding centers” with information, prompts, and field guides to help guests identify the bird installations they found and learn about birds’ lives.
