DLP Walls

DLP Walls presents images and notes from David Lee Powell’s cell walls at the time of his execution in 2010 after spending 32 years on Texas Death Row. This book was published as part of artist Mark Menjivar’s exhibition Birds, Rats, and Roses in partnership with the Texas After Violence Project. Featuring an essay by the artist and more than 100 full-color images of newspaper clippings, notes, and music that Powell composed while on death row without access to an instrument, the book presents a personal archive Powell intended would one-day be made public. The book’s intimate format is in proportion to Powell’s cell, and each image in the book is reproduced at full scale, inviting readers to contemplate the complexities of capital punishment.
